The dance performance choreographed by Luka Ostrež is based on his research of a movement tic that has been accompanying him ever since he was born. At least in his everyday life – when he dances, the tic disappears.
But this is not a story about pathology. Nor is it a story in which the protagonist ultimately accepts himself, and we applaud him for it. We are not looking for the causes of the tic nor for the conditions under which the tic disappears. This story has no end, but it is directed towards the abyss of the end that scares us all.
Locked in an experimental laboratory, in a kind of Sartrean hell, is simultaneously an object of science and of art. Science sets norms, measures his tics and tries to minimize them. It urges him to get rid of his »mistakes« and finally become »normal«.
Over time, the dancer transforms his tics into his creative outlets and extensions. But the moment he transcends “normality,” he is captured by the eager gazes of the populace, which, despite daily submitting to the laws of social normativity, desire occasional difference and strangeness.Stranded between two bodies, the everyday and the performative, and weighed down by a multitudeof gazes, the dancer becomes an object of art.
The performance does not try to be autobiographical and confessional, but rather explores the conditions under which difference can be introduced into repetition. In dialogue with the sound artist Luka Uršič, who audibly materializes his movements in a feedback loop, the dancer flirts with a catastrophic post-industrial modernity in which we cannot imagine neither an ending nor a new beginning.
